Dalrymple speculates as to why people take drugs(do dumb things):

There is certainly a lot of truth to that, but Dalrymple's statement could just as easily be amended to:
perhaps an adversarial stance to the world caused by the emotional, spiritual, cultural and intellectual vacuity of their peers.
At least for those closer to the right end of the bell curve.
